Marin Stables-Phoenix Junction Loop - 5.37 Miles
Trip Date - 6 November, 1999
Marin Stables
- Canyon Trail - 0.69 mi
- This is a quiet tree-covered trail that is cool in the summer and leafy in the Fall.
It goes along a creek (dry in the summer/fall). The tail end is uphill
through a few root-covered switchbacks.
- Concrete Pipeline Fire Road - 0.60 mi
- Nice fire road with the occasional biker, and almost always a runner or two because the
whole length is a little over 2 miles and pretty flat. I sometimes practice my
sitting trot and collected rising trot transitions.
Five Corners
- Concrete Pipeline Fire Road - 1.48 mi
- Fairly flat grade, with slight uphill sections. The latter are a nice place for a
collected canter now and again. A couple of "Morgan-eating" piles of rocks in
the middle and one at the end can create some extra excitement.
- Fish Gulch Trail - 0.57 mi
- About a hundred yards past the buildings at the end of Concrete Pipeline, there's a
dropoff to the left mascarding as the intersection with the Fish Gulch Trail. The
first few yards require some big time leaning back and holding on the cantle to keep from
falling forward. If it weren't for Virginia (who rides out of Marin Stables on
Parados) I never would have found it! It drops down across some serious steps to
Phoenix Junction. Watch out for booking bikes...
Phoenix Junction
- Shaver Grade - 1.1 mi
- Shaver Grade winds up from Phoenix Junction to Five Corners. There's usually a
bike or two that comes booking down, so I try and stay to the right. I think it's a
great place for a canter or even a bit more.
Five Corners
- Deer Park Fire Road - 0.43 mi
- A wierd little fire road that winds down hill. I don't know why, but I
seem to run into old men with walking staves. This, too, can be exciting a
"colt" like Taylor.
Boy Scout Junction
- Moore Trail - 0.40 mi
- A bit of uphill over the rocks followed by a root-infested downhill. I force
Taylor to stop and walk across the roots and avoid sliding down the hillside.
For this reason, it's not one of my favorites. Sometimes I take the connector
fire road down to Canyon and go back the way we come out.
- Canyon Trail - 0.1 mi
- The last bit back to the Stables.
