Mike Thoma Nature Hikes - 1995 - 11Feb95

Samuel P. Taylor State Park - 11 February, 1995

My good friend and contractor, Steve Plath, and I went out in the fog and overcast to get recharged. We passed some "Indian wannabees" in their sweat lodge near the creek. We were blessed with some incredible landscapes of Fetid Adder's Tongues and Coastal Trillium. We saw an large number of Varied Thrushes swooping silently amoung the trees. The weather was 65 degrees and overcast as we started from Devil's Gulch to the top of Barnabe Mtn. We left at 10:40. Our hike twisted and turned 3 hours uphill across several bridges. Then we had a cool view at the top, and 1 hour down on the fireroad, went past Mr. Taylors grave site and back to the car by 2:40.

Here's what we saw:

Birds
Turkey Vulture, Red-tailed Hawk, American Kestrel, Downy Woodpecker, (Stellar's Jay), Scrub Jay, Varied Thrush, Hermit Thrush ?, Dark-eyed "Oregon" Junco.

Ferns
Western Sword Fern, California Maidenhair.

Fish
Steelhead Salmon.

Mushrooms
Artist's Conch, Turkey Tails.

Reptiles & Amphibians
Banana slug.

Trees Coast Redwood, Douglas Fir, California Nutmeg, California Bay.

Wildflowers
Fetid Adder's Tongues, Coast Trillium, Milk Maids, Redwood Sorrel, Hound's Tongue.
