Habitat Classification
These are general and sometimes broad habitat categories,
listed in accordance with likelihood of occurence.
- A - Aerial:
- applies to birds most often seen in flight, soaring
- B - Broadleaf Evergreen Forest:
- live oak, bay laurel, madrone, etc.
- C - Cliffs and Rocky Shore
- E - Evergreen Forest:
- Douglas Fir, Bishop Pine, Redwood Forest
- F - Freshwater:
- ponds, streams and marshes
- G - Grassland:
- fields of annual grasses; pasturelands and "weed" fields
- H - Human Habitations:
- man-influenced by buildings and horticulture
- I - Habitat Islands:
- small stands of trees (often Monterey Cypress) alongs the immediate coast
(species found primarily in this habitat are
occasionally found in habitatis R, B, E and vice versa.)
- L - Lagoons and Estuaries:
- shallow salt of brackish water and associated salt marsh, tidal flats, sand
dunes and beaches.
- O - Open Water:
- in deper bays or off the immediate coast
- P - Pelagic:
- usually seen well offshore on the open ocean
- R - Riparian Forest:
- willow and alder thickets
- S - Coastal Scrub and Chaparral:
- low dense brush
