Organization

Habitat Classification

These are general and sometimes broad habitat categories, listed in accordance with likelihood of occurence.
A - Aerial:
applies to birds most often seen in flight, soaring
B - Broadleaf Evergreen Forest:
live oak, bay laurel, madrone, etc.
C - Cliffs and Rocky Shore
E - Evergreen Forest:
Douglas Fir, Bishop Pine, Redwood Forest
F - Freshwater:
ponds, streams and marshes
G - Grassland:
fields of annual grasses; pasturelands and "weed" fields
H - Human Habitations:
man-influenced by buildings and horticulture
I - Habitat Islands:
small stands of trees (often Monterey Cypress) alongs the immediate coast (species found primarily in this habitat are occasionally found in habitatis R, B, E and vice versa.)
L - Lagoons and Estuaries:
shallow salt of brackish water and associated salt marsh, tidal flats, sand dunes and beaches.
O - Open Water:
in deper bays or off the immediate coast
P - Pelagic:
usually seen well offshore on the open ocean
R - Riparian Forest:
willow and alder thickets
S - Coastal Scrub and Chaparral:
low dense brush
