Hound's Tongue

Hound's Tongue

Cygnoglossum grande

Cygno-glossum,dog and tongue, for the shape and texture of leaves; grande, large.
From the Greek kuno, dog, and glossa, tongue, because of the leaf shape in some species. The plant has erect stems one to three feet tall; the leaves, mostly basal, are long and ovate, slightly hairy on the lower surface. The flowers are dark or light blue resembling our common Forget-Me-Not shape; the tube is usually purple.

Most woods: Ponderosa Pine Forest, Broadleaf Evergreen Forest, Oak Woodland.

February through May.

Sources: Wild Flowers of Marin and and Spring Wildflowers of the SF Bay Region.
